Properties that have been deemed by the Building Department as Unsafe Structures are required to have structural and electrical inspections performed by licensed professional engineers to determine if a building is considered safe for continued occupancy.
A building may be deemed unsafe if the property has an accumulation of debris representing a hazard of combustion, creates hazards with respect to means of egress and fire protection, has unguarded or open windows, and/or work has been performed without proper permits and inspections. These are some common causes of unsafe structures:
Unsafe structures inspections include visual, non-destructive investigation of the building performed by a professional engineer licensed in the State of Florida to determine if the building is safe to be occupied or if repairs are required.
Upon completing the inspection, the professional engineer will submit their findings and expert opinion in the form of a post-inspection report. In order for the building to be considered safe, the professional engineer must certify the integrity of the structure has been maintained, the structure is currently in a condition to securely withstand the weight of its anticipated loads, and the structure will continue to perform safely as intended for the foreseeable future.
