ASK AN ENGINEER...

“With hurricane season starting in June, what should I be doing to prepare my building from a structural standpoint?”

“June brings the start of hurricane season, making it the ideal time to focus on structural readiness before any storms approach. Preparing your building goes far beyond boarding up windows. It begins with understanding how wind, rain, and pressure can affect your structure and taking clear steps to strengthen vulnerable areas.

Start by having a licensed structural engineer inspect your roof, walls, and foundation. We look for signs like aging roof systems, weak or outdated roof-to-wall connections, corrosion in fasteners, and any signs of structural fatigue. These are often the first areas to fail during high winds. Reinforcing these connections with updated hardware can dramatically improve your building’s performance in a storm.

You should also make sure your windows and doors are impact rated or protected, and ensure all exterior sealants are in good condition to prevent water intrusion. Poor drainage, cracked stucco, and open joints around penetrations can allow wind-driven rain to cause major interior damage.

Hurricane season is unpredictable, but your preparation does not have to be. Investing in a structural review now is one of the most effective ways to protect your property, reduce damage, and keep everyone inside safe when the weather takes a turn.”
