ASK AN ENGINEER...

“Are wood-framed homes safe against hurricane force winds?”

“Wood-framed homes have come a long way since the days of the Pilgrims’ simple log cabins! Modern wood construction is far more advanced, with treated lumber, engineered wood products, and reinforced connections making today’s homes much sturdier and more hurricane-resistant. Modern wood framing includes stronger ties and anchors than the timber homes of old, but ensuring those components are in good shape is key to maintaining the structural integrity of your home.

After a long hurricane season, it’s important to give your wood-framed home a post-storm check-up. High winds and heavy rain can test the limits of any structure, particularly the roof framing and connections, where wind uplift can cause damage. Keeping an eye on potential post-storm damage ensures your home can weather future seasons with the same strength and durability. Inspect for any loose or missing fasteners, warped wood, or signs of water intrusion.

As always, be sure to consult a structural engineer if you think anything looks like it may need expert evaluation. If you need assistance with a structural assessment of your property, please contact us.”

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS...

When it comes to the Construction Administration (CA) phase of a project, cost is always an important consideration. Involving your structural engineer during CA can help you avoid costly mistakes. To learn more about CA services, read our blog post.

Masonry bond patterns affect structural integrity, which affect structural performance. Running bond sets the standard for strength, while other patterns like stack bond require additional reinforcement for stability in certain designs. To learn more about masonry bond patterns, click here.

NEW THIS MONTH...

HONORING OUR VETERANS

Veterans Day, established in 1919 to honor the end of World War I, is a time to reflect on the bravery of those who fought for our freedoms. It’s a day to celebrate the unity and sacrifice of soldiers who worked together, ensuring the values and liberties we cherish. We honor all the brave men and women that helped our country become a place where our freedoms are protected.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for the communities we build together. Since 1621, when Pilgrims and Native Americans shared a harvest feast, the importance of community has resonated as something for which we should all be grateful. Today, it’s more than a celebration of collaboration between diverse groups, it honors the spirit of gratitude for all the wonderful things that bless our collective lives.
